Electronic Calculators from the Past

AddingMachine01

When I first looked at these gadgets, I really think that was an antique calculator.

It is actually fantastic anachronistic adding machines designed by Andy Aaron. An adding machine is a type of calculator, usually specialized for bookkeeping calculations. Conceptual residing between the abacus and supercomputer, these machines are the products of Aaron’s ‘Back to the future’ type of obsession, a marriage of 70’s era calculator technology, LED display, and old, odd switches in still older wooden boxes. Some have a nautical vibe, some agricultural, others look like they might be magic contraptions - all are unique and ingenious.

At the time when lighting-fast calculation is taken for granted, Aaron’s machine offer deliberate purposefulness to everyday calculation.

Car sQuba - The Underwater Car

You must have watched this in the James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me”. 30 years later, you can finally drive underwater by yourself.

Car sQuba - The Underwater Car

A Swiss company called Rinspeed has recently announced its newest project: an underwater car. Named “sQuba,” the car can both drive on roads, and then - at the push of a button - dive up to 10 meters (33 feet) under the sea.

Rinspeed describes sQuba as the world’s first real car to drive both on land and underwater, thanks to some cutting-edge technology. The car has a steel chassis, while its lightweight body panels are made of carbon nanotubes.

An electric motor provides rear-wheel drive while on roads. Underwater, two propellers in the stern and two jet drives in the bow propel the “amphibious” vehicle. With zero emissions, the design is even environmentally friendly, eliminating any pollution into the sea.

The two-seater also includes a self-contained on-board oxygen system to supply the driver and passenger with fresh air for breathing.

Transformer Made in China

Some dudes down in Nanjing just built a full-size Transformer! Costing US$8,000 and weighing in at a hefty 600kg–well, you just gotta see this sucker for yourself.

Transformer Made in China

The three fans, who grew up watching the Transformers cartoons and comics, started with parts from a Citroen C2, and sculpted, built, welded, and screwed together by hand someone they call “X2″ who is based on the Bumblebee and Jazz characters from the popular movie. It’s got a Chinese flavor, according to the makers, which can be seen in its more square head, based on ancient Chinese headgear designs. During the 3 months that they were building X2, the makers say: “Every time we saw X2 we felt like he was full of life, you could talk to him, and you felt that at any moment he’d start moving.” The three spent 50-60,000 RMB (~ US $8,000) to build him. X2 weighs more than 600 kg and uses original Citreon C2 lights and tires; the rest is hand-sculpted synthetic resin, glass, and metal.

They’re planning on making more.

RussianRocket01

Engineers rolled a Russian booster rocket out to its launch pad at the Baikonur cosmodrome Monday in final preparation for the launch of a three-man crew, including Malaysia’s first astronaut, to the international space station (ISS)

The Soyuz-FG rocket with the Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft attached to it will blast off into space from the Central Asian steppe on Wednesday night carrying Malaysian Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, Russian Yuri Malenchenko and American Peggy Whitson.
