Hubble Space Telescope in Action


The Hubbles Space Telescope is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Since its launched on April 24, 1990 from space shuttle Discovery, it has been responsible for many new observations and has helped astronomers achieve a better understanding of the universe. It has since become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy.

Here are some basic facts about The Hubble Space Telescope:

Mission Duration: Up to 20 years
Size: About the size of a large school bus
Cost at Launch: US$1.5 billion
Time to Complete One Orbit: 97 minutes
Speed: 17,500 mph (28,000 kph)
Energy source: the Sun
Mechanism: Two 25-foot solar panels
Power usage: 2,800 watts
