Narrow Habitation
Can you actually stay in a house with 1 meter WIDE by 10 meters TALL?
A house calls attention in Madre de Deus, Brazil; it have three floors and even the builder had faith in what he built. Helenita, the designer and the owner of the house who is now living happily inside.
At first, the municipality refused, but in the end with the plan allowed the construction, that became a touristic spot of the small town of 12 thousand people.
There are benches in front of the house where the tourists can spent some time watching the unusual building. Some, more curious, ask to go inside and take pictures, in which Helenita (woman in yellow) allows. The couple now have plans to build a 4th floor, “open, for leisure, with barbecue and everything”.

UPDATE (March 11th):
I’ve got the same doubt as you guys having, that the house doesn’t look 1meter wide especially at the kicthen.
Thanks for Ana, one of the commetors below who is from Brazil and knows the house.
“The house is really wider, but only at the back. It’s 1m wide at the entrance and 2m wide at the back - and 10m tall, with 3 floors. It’s amazing what this simple woman did with a such small piece of land without any “architectural” help: 2 rooms, kitchen, 3 bedrooms with washrooms and a veranda!”
She also include another link which was in Portuguese: [Arkitectos]

I agree Phillip - it’s at least 2 meters wide. Having said that, Helenita’s feet do resemble those of a hobbit’s (or maybe it’s the camera angle)!

Such a house exists in Montréal; it has been there for more than 70 years and has been featured in the famous novel “Bonheur d’occasion” (”The tin flute”) by Gabrielle Roy:

Looks wider in the back than in the front. Look at the first picture - you can see both sides of the house. It might be one meter wide in front and several meters wide in back.
There are a few houses in my local area (Berkeley/Oakland, CA) that have one end that is extremely narrow. One in Berkeley near where I used to live had a normal looking front, but tapered to 1-meter wide in back (just enough room for a door). It was on an odd-shaped lot next to an old train line.

It looks like 1.872 meters to me. No, I should say 1.9 to make it round.
1 meter, two meters, three meters… who gives a damn?! It’s narrow enough for any of us…
on 09 Mar 2007 at 5:13 am 8.Eric said …
Definitely wider than a meter, but still a very intriguing building! I want to eventually build an unusual house - probably not like this, but I am interested nonetheless.

Actualy the may be 1 m wide on the street side
it goes wider in to the backyard.
due to viewing angle of a person standing in front of the building it is not obvious that it’s getting wider.
2 images of tight rooms have items placed on the side where tiles are cut so it would be less obvious when you’re inside.

Clearly the house widens at the back. Look closely at the photos and count the floor tiles. Assuming they are consistently sized throughout the house, and it appears they are, the house doubles in size. The narrowest portion has 3 tiles across while the widest appears to have 6.

Very interesting - the kitchen looks quite livable, but I know that I could not survive psychologically in a house this narrow in our cold climate - I would be very interested to see the interior of the house in Montreal. I could not find a shot of the back of this house in Brazil to understand the size of the kitchen.

Yes Phillip and Swoop, you guys are right! I’m an architect from Brazil and I know this house pretty well (actually, we’ve heard of it since 2005). The house is really wider, but only at the back. It’s 1m wide at the entrance and 2m wide at the back - and 10m tall, with 3 floors. It’s amazing what this simple woman did with a such small piece of land without any “architectural” help: 2 rooms, kitchen, 3 bedrooms with washrooms and a veranda! She is also planning a terrace on the top of everything. This is what I call imagination, even if the aesthetic solution is not that great… Well, for me - anyone has a different taste. I’m sure Helenita loves her house…

For the commenter who said that Canada is more enlightened than the US because breastfeeding is not legally considered obscene, please don’t think all us 50 states are like that. Here in Minnesota, breastfeeding in public is specifically not obscene, according to state law, and a woman cannot be convicted of indecent exposure for breastfeeding if her nipple is exposed in the process.
Some states go further; Wisconsin, for instance, explicitly bans interfering with a nursing mother in any place where she and the baby are otherwise authorized to be.
I think Facebook made a mistake with this decision, though as one commenter pointed out, there may be more to the story than we know and Facebook is probably not allowed to tell us that by its own privacy policies.

According to Dell the reason for the delay was the drivers weren’t ready and their app which helps automate the installation process was not ready. Google it and you’ll find the stories…

Hello,
I am a writer for a national web site working on a story about narrow houses. I would love to write about this house in Brazil, and I was hoping to get more info about the house and the images on this site. Could you let me know where they came from?
Thanks.
